T-pod – the world’s first all-electric autonomous truck

No driver’s cab, more cargo capacity: the T-pod from the Swedish tech start-up Einride travels autonomously and is solely powered by batteries

Together with the Swedish tech start-up Einride, DB Schenker is aiming to put the world’s first truck that is both all-electrically propelled and autonomous on the road by the end of this year. The T-pod has now been launched by the partners at a DB Schenker facility in the town of Jönköping in central Sweden, where it will be continuously deployed to and from a warehouse. As soon as authorization from the Swedish Transport Agency has been granted, the innovative heavy goods truck is set to also travel on public roads.

The T-pod’s guidance is permanently managed by a technical system. This is why the vehicle can do without a driver’s cab and thus has additional cargo space. An operator monitors the vehicle and can intervene at any time from a type of command center that may well be several hundred kilometers away. Part of the concept is that one operator can manage a whole fleet of T-pods. Einride and DB Schenker initiated their partnership in April. The agreement includes the pilot project in Jönköping and an option for additional pilots internationally.

“We at DB Schenker are working at full speed on sustainable and innovative logistics. Autonomous driving will become increasingly important for this,” said Jochen Thewes, CEO at Schenker AG. “Heavy road transport is responsible for a substantial part of global CO2 emissions. By substituting electricity for diesel, we reduce CO2 emissions by 90 percent,” said Robert Falck, CEO and founder of Einride. “We are happy and grateful that DB Schenker has chosen to be part of this revolution, disrupting a huge global market.”
